Gunter ISD Exemplary Again
Gunter Independent School District (GISD) and all three GISD campuses achieved the Texas Education Agency's (TEA's) "Exemplary' rating on the 2010 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, better known as the "TAKS." Gunter ISD is one of only 239 school districts in Texas who rated "Exemplary" out of over 1,200 districts tested. Only three other school districts in Grayson County are "Exemplary."
This is GISD's second year in a row to achieve the state's highest rating and the 3rd year in a row for all three campuses to be rated "Exemplary." As most people know, being rated "Exemplary" is difficult to achieve. To qualify for this designation, an ISD must have at least 90% of its students pass the TAKS, 95% of its students must either graduate on time or continue for a 5th year, and a district's middle school drop-out rate has to be 1.8% or lower.
Other school districts in Grayson County receiving the "Exemplary" rating are: Pottsboro, Tom Bean and Whitewright. Just south of Gunter in Collin County, Celina ISD and Prosper ISD are both rated "Exemplary."
All other school districts in Grayson Counter received a "Recognized" rating. Those districts are: Bells, Collinsville, Denison, Howe, Sherman, Tioga, Van Alstyne, Whitesboro and S&S,

Building at Mahard Egg Farm Burns
A large warehouse at Mahard Egg Farm in Prosper caught fire Saturday, 7/31. The building, estimated to be 100 yards long, was being removed when the fire started. It formerly housed thousands of chickens but is no longer used.
Fighting the fire was especially difficult because of a shortage of fire hydrants close to Mahard Egg Farm. Fire departments from Prosper, Little Elm, Aubrey, Celina and Lewisville responded. Water from a pond at the site was also used to help fight the fire.
Mahard Egg is one of the largest egg suppliers in the country and has been in business in Prosper since 1930.
No one was hurt in the fire and no livestock was injured or killed. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
